Understanding The Bill of Rights

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution states that “Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.”

THINK: What it would be like to live in a country where the government does not guarantee its citizens a “free press?” To what types of news stories or articles would they be denied access?

To view the links below, right click on them and choose "Open in new window."
Skim today’s issue of The New York Times. http://eedition.nytimes.com/newsstand/main Which articles or images would probably not be published in a country without a law guaranteeing freedom of the press? Record your ideas on this worksheet. You can type in the fields and save the sheet to your H drive. Then, when you have completed the sheet, save it again, print it, and give the hard copy to me. If you finish early, continue researching your debate topic.
